Okay, you’re going to think I am an idiot with a ton of Google worthy questions but how do you make these? Like do they come in colors and you can model them into figurines? Is it expensive? Do you have to bake it like pottery? Could you do a mini tutorial? *begs* I just became a Girl Scout Troop Leader and this looks like something fun to do with the troop!

    Hey Mel,

Haha no worries, I can totally do a mini tutorial if you’d like! There are also a ton of them if you go on YouTube and look for “polymer clay tutorial”.

These type of clay do come in all sorts of color, BUT you can also get only WHITE clay and use acrylic paint to color them. For me, I use mostly colored clay, and then paint for small details (ie: blood, faces, etc). Everyone has their own way of doing it.

It’s only expensive when you have to buy everything (tools, clay, oven, etc) all at once, but after that, all you have to worry about is buying clay if run out of them. Clay comes in different brands therefore different brands have different prices. For beginners, I would get something that’s made for kids, such as: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LB644O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 (I’ve been using that for my recent creations).

You can find everything at craft stores like JoAnn and Michaels, but I would advise finding coupons for these guys or else it’ll be easy to be spend over $100 for polymer clay stuff.

Yes, you have to bake it like pottery. But you have to buy a separate oven for that. A portable bread oven or craft oven would be best.

I hope that answers all your questions, and if you have more, feel free to ask away. Oh, and that’s really awesome to hear that you’re a Girl Scout Troop Leader. Congrats and have fun with that!

I had an image of making it into some sort of baby twirly thing (those things that you place over the crib that turn – no idea what they’re called) with the octopus in the middle and each limb spinning around it.

Yeah, it’s a pretty weird idea, but it would look so cool, especially with all those colors!
